The following letter was sent to the Iranian Ambassador in Tokyo urging the rescission of the death penalty for Ms. Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, who was charged with adultery, and at the same time encouraging the Iranian Authority to review the penalty for adultery in light of the international human rights and women’s rights treaties to which Iran is party.

Re: Please immediately stop execution of Ms. Mokarrameh Ebrahimi
Your Excellency:
The Asia-Japan Women’s Resource Center is shocked to learn of the execution of Mr. Ja’far Kiani by stoning on 5 July 2007 and is deeply concerned about the safety of his partner, Ms. Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, and their two children.
We believe that the death penalty for adultery is too harsh and brutal a punishment. It also violates the fundamental human rights laid out in the International Covenants on Human Rights, to which Islamic Republic of Iran is a State Party. We request the Authority of Iran to immediately stop the planned execution of Ms. Mokarrameh Ebrahimi and to repeal the death sentences passed on her, guaranteeing her physical and psychological integrity with her children. We also ask the Iranian Authority to review the penalty for adultery in accordance with the international human rights and women’s rights treaties.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Yours sincerely,
Asia-Japan Women’s Resource Center
